The Iron Mountain is a project I designed for school. We had to design three workshops for three different artists and one exhibition room. The demands for this project were: The building would be built in the desert of Arizona. There has to be three workshops for three different artist, and there has to be an exhibition room.

Inspiration
My inspiration for The Iron Mountain was the erosion that made the deserts of Arizona as famous as they are today. I found it very interesting that almost everything in the nature of Arizona is flushed away because of the rain, except for the Iron that’s in the sand. The result of this is the famous red colour of the dirt in the deserts of Arizona. That’s the reason why I have designed three iron “cages” that represents the iron atoms who holds the desert dirt on their back, because the iron is stronger than the dirt who is flushed away.
Design
The hill shaped concrete layer above the steel cages who represents the dirt, is made of a very porous kind of concrete. I did this so that the nature can erode this concrete shape by the time. The same it does with the nature around it. In this way the shape of the building will change endlessly. After a few years, when holes are created in the concrete structure around the exhibition room, there will be extra light and men will look differently to the art which is presented.
